New York Giants GM Joe Schoen’s make or break year will come down to the 2025 NFL draft.
The New York Giants 2025 draft is more fascinating than any other team in the league for a couple of reasons. The team’s future at quarterback is completely unsettled, and the front office and coaching staff are hanging by a thread. Paired together, every move they make in the upcoming draft will be scrutinized within an inch of its life.
Joe Schoen’s comical mishandling of the Daniel Jones situation tarnished his reputation among the NFL’s fanbase. Not only did he overcommit to a mediocre quarterback, but every moment of it was recorded for public consumption on HBO’s Hard Knocks.
New York Giants roster mistakes
Saquon Barkley felt mistreated and signed with a rival, leaving team owner John Mara pacing the hallways at the mere idea of him wearing a Philadelphia jersey. Barkley then went on to have a career year, came within inches of breaking the NFL’s all time rushing record, and topped it all off with a Super Bowl win all in his very first year with the Eagles. Meanwhile the Giants limped to another losing season.
Without Saquon Barkley and while throwing the dice on multiple veteran quarterbacks, the NY Giants future outlook looks bleak offensively. The signings of both Jameis Winston AND Russell Wilson give off a sense of desperation, and with the draft around the corner there could be yet another quarterback arriving in New York before the sun sets on the offseason.
Make no mistake about it, Joe Schoen’s job security is riding on the product the Giants field in 2025. Plus any potential indication that they drafted the right guy to drive them into the future. Which leads me to believe the front office almost NEEDS to add a QB in the draft at the end of April, to avoid being completely expendable.
Giants defense poised for successful 2025 season
While it’s been easy to criticise Schoen for the decisions made over the past couple of years, he has quietly put together a very solid defense. The New York Giants rebuilding plan is in full swing, it’s just been masked by poor decision making at the games most important position.
The Giants roster moves so far in 2025 include Jevon Holland at safety and Paulson Adebo at corner, who both now add to a secondary that’s been well built through the draft. That secondary will compliment the pass rush unit upfront led by Brian Burns and co, and overall the defensive group looks competitive.
New york giants 2025 draft moves
Joe Schoen’s draft decisions have been mixed, but he did land Malik Nabers in 2024 and the Giants have their first star receiver since Odell Beckham Jr as a result.

That said, Nabers was fighting alone in 2024 with the rest of the offense dragging its heels. The offensive line is still underperforming and there’s zero star talent in the skill positions beyond a sophomore Nabers.
So what is the NY Giants draft strategy in 2025? With the third overall pick there’s a very good chance they miss out on both Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders at quarterback. If that’s the case, the answer is simple.
Take the superstar that is Travis Hunter in a bid to build one of the most thrilling young receiver duos in football. You then do whatever you need to do to walk away from the draft with a guy like Jaxson Dart in round two, or perhaps Jalen Milroe as the QB with the highest ceiling.
Both need time to develop, but the intent is crucial. The NFL Draft in 2025 will reshape the Giants one way or another. Either they’re primed to compete again in 2026 under the guidance of Schoen and Daboll, or they’re overhauling the staff and the roster entirely with no real future in sight.
So, is Joe Schoen ready to handle the NFL GM hot seat in 2025, or will he buckle under the pressure of it all?
